Will 'Rudderless' help Selena Gomez recover movie cred?
After earning a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival, Rudderless is preparing to go mainstream. The family drama (in theaters and on VOD Oct. 17) features a strong performance from Billy Crudup, but may also do positive things for Selena Gomez, who convincingly plays a bereaved girlfriend.
Her film career could use a positive boost: Selena’s last movie, Behaving Badly, managed to earn a rare 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. (Vulture recapped it hilariously here.)
Rudderless is the directorial debut from William H. Macy, and follows a grieving father (Crudup) in a downward spiral who stumbles across a box of his recently deceased son’s demo tapes and lyrics. Shocked by the discovery, he forms a band based on the music in the hope of finding some catharsis.
